Talking with Congressman Zack Space

by Melody Quick ~ September 20th, 2007

The staff of The Hometown View recently had the distinct honor in teleconferencing with Congressman Zack Space (OH-18) who was in Washington D.C.

Congressman Space introduced legislation to expand broadband access to all rural areas in the state of Ohio. The legislation recently passed in the House Farm Bill to help fund broadband connectivity in all rural areas. The Hometown View is behind this legislation 100 percent.

Broadband internet technology is the commercial breakthrough in the 21st century just as railroads in the 19th century and electricity in the 20th century brought about revolutions in the way our economy functioned. Rural areas did not have electricity until the 1940’s.

The “Digital Divide” puts these areas at a disadvantage over others because the first thing a business looks at when considering where to locate a new site is if the area has broadband available. If the area does not have broadband then the company will not locate there which keeps good paying jobs out of the area.

Broadband is not a technology just for our teenagers to play computer games on the internet or for us to shop online. Broadband is much more than that. Broadband technology is helping to save lives through telemedicine, helping students to go to college from home with Distance Learning, and helping with security of our homeland by making it possible for first responders to coordinate efforts in communicating with each other over long distances. Broadband is the technology that is closing the “Digital Divide”

Broadband technology research with the Federal Funding Mapping Process, is studying where broadband coverage is now and where the special needs areas are that do not have the technology. They are using Connect Kentucky as a model for the project. Kentucky will have broadband connection to all areas in the state by the end of 2007.

We also asked Congressman Space if there was anything he would like to tell our readers, Congressman Space said to tell everyone in the 18th District of Ohio that he is available to help them with many issues they may have including Social Security, Veterans Issues, Passports Issues and U.S. Flag purchases to name a few. The 18th District includes the counties of Carroll, Harrison, Tuscarawas, Holmes, Knox, Coshocton, Guernsey, Belmont, Muskingum, Licking, Morgan, Athens, Vinton, Jackson, Ross, and Hocking. You can visit Congressman Space’s website for more information.

We would like to thank Congressman Space for taking the time out of his busy schedule to talk with us. We will continue keeping our readers informed about issues that affect them in each county in Ohio including press releases from Congressman Zack Space.

Melody, Lori and Ed would also like to thank Congressman Space for saying The Hometown View gives a “sense of community” to everyone here in Ohio. We encourage everyone to participate and post happenings that you feel is informative and interesting to people in your county.
